Seems that despite trying to I cannot not support the local economy down here or the only other stuff I found (after visiting 4x large local electrical and office supply stores yesterday) was the same standard HP ~190gsm glossy photo papers in each store that specifically said only for use with dye based inks Glad too that they are not so daft as to ship a great printer like this with absolutely no "test" paper on in the box, especially as all I can find locally is either cheap and cheerful brand photo paper that probably is not good for the pigment inks, not that I want to waste good ink on such paper anyway. Am starting to think it might very well be worth the peace of mind. I think this is the same 2 year extension you mention, with onsite repair or replacement. and yeah, I think I am seriously going to investigate further what is on offer for the €150 (about $225) I was quoted here for extended warranty. That refurb/refusal style policy sounds great. will have to talk some more to Epson about what is involved and by when I need to take the warranty out (eg is it still possible to do in ~12 months time when the standard warranty is about to expire?). Your issue Stuart is making me think the extended warranty might be a good idea. I sincerely hope this kind of error is an exception and not the norm - still waiting on delivery of mine (but haven't got any paper as yet either and no one stocks any decent stuff locally, so its going to be frustrating if the printer arrives before the paper does that I have ordered eh? ) the answers too are often less than helpful or informative.Īnyway. and quite often require at least a second email to get any kind of response.

I sent the email on Sunday evening sometime, and by 09:40 on Monday morning I had an email, all in English, sat in my inbox with all the details as requested, including contact names and tel nos in case I had more questions.īy comparison, Canon's response times here in Portugal are in the region of several days to several weeks.

The only thing I have to go off on Epson so far here in Portugal is the response time when I asked about the 3 year extended warranty. so this should give at least US buyers a lot of confidence in Epson's dedication to their kit and their service and support levels. not bad compensation eh?Īlso, I think you only find out how good a company is when things actually do go wrong with stuff (which they of course do from time to time in this modern technological era).

and as you said you pretty much get the printer for free now with the replacement set of inks you'll be getting. really great thread so far, its been very helpful!ĭamn that is bad news, but also good to hear that Epson were quick to rectify the situation and replace it. Having no idea on reliability of these beasts nor what replacement parts might actually cost me (eg print heads or similar), then I don't have anything to base my decision on. I was quoted €150 (euros) by Epson for the extended 3 year, onsite warranty for this printer, which doesn't sound too bad (Epson UK mentioned £270/€320!!).ĭoes anyone think this is actually worth doing, or should I just put the money in a pot and save it just in case the printer does have a problem during that time. Going to see what else I can find locally, but TBH the corner of Europe in which I reside is very backward in terms of finding photographic equipment, so not holding my breath there. The Smooth Pearl paper I am hoping will be a good price/quality ratio for the more "regular" prints, and the Gold Fibre Silk with its baryta coating is supposed to have a more textured "old school"/darkroom media kind of look so it sounds like just the job for things that are that bit more special.

from what I read they are great quality papers at a great price, and after many years of shooting Ilford B&W or sepia films in my pre-digital days, I feel a sort of affinity towards them. In terms of paper, for starter I have ordered a couple of packs of Ilford Galerie papers (smooth pearl and gold fibre silk). as FeXL suggests and as I am fully aware, I have a lot of experimenting to do before I can expect to understand anything about what results I might get with different types of paper and print media (want to try things like canvases out too once I understand a bit more about the results I might get and what kind of images work best on what kinds of media). and of course, from all the reports I have read it sounds like its capable of producing totally stunning results - lets hope my photography is up to the job now ehĪny experience you have of different papers, or other suggestions for using this machine are openly welcomed too. I have to say I am VERY excited at getting it, especially as I have been mulling the idea over for nearly 2 years now and from what I can see, this thing "ticks most of the boxes" for my current needs. Palmor - thanks for the "vote of confidence" with this printer.
